Vancouver Canada's Mother Mother are generating much recognition with their original approach to modern pop/rock music; a beautifully bent portrait of vocal harmony, clever, offbeat lyricism, and dynamic instrumentation. Their sound is best encapsulated on their sophomore album, O My Heart, produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, The New Pornographers) and Mother Mother's own frontman, Ryan Guldemond. O My Heart is the band's second album on Toronto-based boutique indie label, Last Gang Records (Metric, The New Pornographers, DFA 1979, Crystal Castles) and was released in September 2008, following the group's 2007 debut, Touch Up. To date the release has seen much success, topping the Canadian campus and community radio charts and climbing very high as well as sustaining a charting on the CMJ Top 200 for more than 14 weeks and counting. In support of O My Heart, Mother Mother have embarked on several North American tours and festivals, including an extensive tour of the US as support for the Sam Roberts Band with stops at CMW and SXSW along the way.

Como hoje tem show do Camera obscura aqui em hellcife , vai um especial !

The hot rats

The Hot Rats é pouco conhecido por aí, mas por traz dele se encontram dois músicos já familiarizados com o sucesso: Gaz Coombes e Danny Goffey, integrantes do Supergrass. Na verdade esta nova banda é um projeto paralelo formado pelos músicos apenas para tocar composições de outras bandas, principalmente enquanto o baixista do Supergrass, Mark Quinn, se recuperava de uma operação na coluna.

O que era apenas um passatempo rendeu um disco muito interessante, “Turn Ons”. Este álbum traz um apanhado de músicas que artistas que influenciaram Coombes e Goffey em sua formação.

Em algumas das 12 faixas que compõem o disco a dupla manteve o mesmo clima da versão original e em outras a música foi praticamente reconstruída no estilo do The Hot Rats. Bons exemplos das que mantém muito da versão original é “The Lovecats”, um dos sucessos do The Cure. A versão continua dançante, mas ganhou um clima mais Rock n’ Roll e moderna.

Outra que não foi muito modificada é “The Cristal Ship”, uma das melhores músicas do The Doors. A versão do Hot Rats manteve o clima ‘viajante’ da original, mas também adicionou energia extra nas partes mais barulhentas. Ótima versão.

Uma música que esta bem diferente do original é “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)”. A nova roupagem deu uma cara sessentista ao clássico dos Beastie Boys.

O repertório passa pelos anos 60, 70 e 80 e consegue fazer músicas tão diferentes como “E.M.I.”, dos Sex Pistols, e “Bike”, do Pink Floyd, conviverem no álbum sem grandes problemas. E sem causar estranheza na audição. A despretensão do projeto ajudou a criar um disco gostoso de ouvir.
